This workshop is modelled after a highly successful summer program the JACL ran 20 years ago. DESCRIPTION:PLEASE RSVP BY FRIDAY\, NOVEMBER 22\, 2024\nEmail: event@sonomacountyjacl.org\nVoicemail: 707-836-3560 \nDear JACL Members\, \nIt’s that time of year\, again!\nFor those of you that did not attend last year\, here are some of the changes we’ve made to the Community Mochitsuki. \nFirst\, we want to provide members of our community an opportunity to make Mochi together . . . the way our ancestors and our families used to. We want to reinforce the sense of community and focus on the tradition of the Mochitsuki as a collaborative activity. \nWe’ll be making less Mochi\, since we’re not selling to raise funds. In fact\, we’re not charging anything to participate in the event. \nFamilies/Individuals interested in participating will be asked to purchase their mochi rice (2 pounds of dry sweet rice (mochi gome) which will make approximately 3 pounds of mochi)\, wash the rice\, soak it (8-12 hours)\, drain off the excess water\, then bring it to the Memorial Hall at 9:00 am Saturday\, November 30th. \nWe’ll have water in the steamers boiling\, some rice already steaming\, and we’ll be able to start pounding mochi around 9:30 am. For those that can come earlier to help set up\, we’ll be at the Hall at 8:00 am. \nDay of the Event \nWhen you arrive on Saturday\, look for the “Check-In” table\, we’ll sign you in\, tag your rice\, and place your mochi gome into the que. You’ll be able to track your mochi as it makes its way through the process. We will provide containers for your finished mochi. \nAs a community mochi making event\, we’re going to ask that you stay until all of the mochi has been pounded\, formed\, cooled\, and packaged . . . oh yeah\, and we’ve finished cleaning up. Like the Hawaiian proverb\, “Laulima”\, “many hands working together.” \nIf you have never participated in a Mochitsuki before\, don’t worry\, there will be experienced volunteers there to teach you how to do everything from steaming\, pounding\, shaping\, cooling and packaging. You don’t have to do everything\, but we do ask that you join in the fun and help out! \nWe plan to make Mochi until mid-day (when we hope to be done)\, break for a potluck lunch\, and then clean up \nIf you’ve not participated in a Japanese Community Potluck before\, please bring a main course or side dish\, enough for your family and extra to share with others. DESCRIPTION:Sonoma County JACL hosts\nNational Park Service Amache Workshop\nSunday\, April 23\, 2023\n11 am – 1pm\nEnmanji Memorial Hall\n1200 Gravenstein Hwy So.\, Sebastopol\n  \nNow that the Amache Concentration Camp (Granada Relocation Center) has been approved as a National Historic Site\, the National Park Service (NPS) is moving on with next steps and they want to hear from you! \nThe NPS is preparing a foundation document to guide future planning and management of Amache National Historic Site. \nBefore writing the document that will determine what the site will look like and how it will be managed\, they want to engage with the Amache stakeholders (those who were or families of those incarcerated there) and the general public to gather their opinions on preliminarily management planning for the new Amache National Historic Site. \nSebastopol is one of eleven sites in Colorado and California where NPS is holding workshops to gather feedback. \nLearn more about the foundation document process and share your thoughts and ideas on the future of Amache. There will be a short informational presentation (about 30 minutes)\, followed by opportunities to ask questions and share thoughts and ideas with NPS staff in an open-house format where attendees can move around to different stations and share information with NPS staff on different topics (about 1.5 hours). \nAlso available that day\, for those who want to share stories or memories of Amache or experiences leading up to or after incarceration\, Sonoma County JACL will have a video recorder setup to capture it. \n  \nNo registration necessary. For questions\, contact lauriehogen@gmail.com. \n“BeLonging” portrays the journey of three different first-generation Asian women from their ancestral lands to Northern California. \nYoungmi Jung\, originally from South Korea\, came to Northern California to study religion\, and is now a Methodist minister currently serving in the Bay Area. \nSachiko Knappman moved to the United States from Japan as a young bride\, but soon after lost her husband to cancer and had to navigate her life in a new country alone with a newborn child. \nJean Bee Chan\, now a retired Sonoma State University math professor\, immigrated to the United States to escape the violence and turmoil in Japanese-occupied southern China. \nThe film lifts the voices of AAPI immigrants living in California and captures the rich diversity among AAPI communities\, one person’s story at a time. Meet award-wining journalist-filmmaker\, Lina Hoshino\, and listen to a brief presentation by Zahir Qaderi\, a recent immigrant from Afghanistan.

The workshop will be held from 4pm to 5pm Pacific Time via Zoom. \nThe workshop will feature Alan Murakami\, Sonoma County native and retired school psychologist. He will talk about the book he recently published Peter Masuoka – The Uncle I Never Knew. The book is a unique and touching biography of his uncle\, Peter Masuoka\, who grew up in rural Sonoma County. He and his family were illegally interned at Amache\, where he then volunteered and was assigned to the famous and highly decorated 442nd Regimental Combat Team. \nMurakami explains\, “This book uniquely describes these experiences through Pete’s own eyes! It attempts to describe this sensitive and caring person who gave his best at everything. Many people who knew Pete considered him a dear friend. It is a product of many hours of interviews with family and friends and WWII research. His is a story of self-sacrifice\, valor and patriotism – fighting for his country\, the United States of America.” \nThis workshop is open to the public and free of charge. There will be time for audience Q&A’s\, following a brief video presentation and author interview.
